VIDEO REVIEW: ENVE Composites G23 Wheelset Review – A Disc Brake Gravel Wheelset

“The G23 is the definition of a true disc gravel wheelset. At 330 grams, ENVE’s lightest 700c tubeless rim accelerates quickly and ascends with ease. Armed against pinch flats with the patent-pending Wide Hookless Bead, the G23 is tough and relentless on road, path or trail. The G23 is a 700c tubeless carbon clincher wheelset, with a generous 23mm internal width, specifically conceived to meet the performance and ride quality demands of serious mixed surface cyclists.” – ENVE

JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew put the G23 wheels to the long-term review process. They were his wheels for the 2018 Dirty Kanza 200, and have rolled plenty of training miles on his local gravel roads.

Sweet wheels! But oof, the price. Even cooler car – what kind of bike rack do you use on your element?

Hi Will, I don’t use a rack with my Element, the bikes always go inside.

Interesting, how have you found works best securing them in the car? I have an element and have been trying to figure this out myself.

You take the bike, remove the front wheel and heck… just throw it in there…

LOL, pretty much, except I do use nice cushy wheel bags.

Just the kind of wheels that’s outside my budget.
What wheels would you recommend with budget of $ 500? I was looking at DT Swiss ER 1600 db 32, but they cost a bit more. I was also looking at Hunt 4 Season Gravel Disc wheelset and the more expensive Mason X Hunt 4 Season Disc wheelset. I will be running 40 mm tires on them. Thanks.

Check out the Hunt 4 Season Disc Wheels – I reviewed those wheels here on the site. Excellent value!

    Hi JOM,

Can you comment on how easy or difficult it was to remove tubeless tires? My concern is being able to break the bead in the field with these tires. I have seen previous videos of MTB tires being very difficult to remove from ENVE’s MTB wheelset.

    Thanks,

    Anthony

Anthony, the only tyre that gave me trouble was the WTB Sendero on the G27 wheelset. But, nothing major, and no tools. Solid pressure with both thumbs and I was able to break the seal. I had problems with the G23.
