Super Aerodynamic with Vibration-Damping Spokes

“The Sparrow50 Gold is 14% more aerodynamic than our previous-generation Sparrow, with the same vibration damping no aero rival can match — a combination that, in our finish-time modeling, pulls ahead of wheels like Roval, ENVE, and Zipp as the gravel turns rough.”

Wind Tunnel Tested

“14.3% more aerodynamic than the standard Sparrow — tested at the A2 Wind Tunnel against the leading aero-gravel wheels. Fast through the air, quiet over the ground.”

Hooked Rims!
  • The Sparrow50 Gold wheels are compatible with 40 mm – 60 mm tires and were optimized in the wind tunnel with 45 mm to 55 mm tires in close collaboration with Schwalbe. The Schwalbe G-One RS PRO in 45 mm is the fastest, most aerodynamic tire we have tested for Cat 1 gravel

  • 5 Watt Vibration Savings: In independent testing, John Karrasch recorded roughly 5 watts of savings at 30 km/h from Berd’s vibration-damping spokes alone. Real watts, on real rough ground, confirmed by a third party.

  • Unmatched Smoothness: Berd spokes are the only spokes that use viscoelastic damping to dissipate high-frequency vibration, converting vibrations from gravel into heat within the spokes through time-dependent strain relaxation in the fiber. No steel spoke can do it.

  • 30mm Internal Rim Width: The Sparrow50 Gold wheels are tubeless ready with a 30 mm internal rim width. A super wide 4 mm hooked bead locks the tire in place for confident retention with all tire types and protection against pinch flats at low pressure.

  • Lightest in Class: At 1,298 grams, the Sparrow50 Gold wheels are the lightest production 50 mm depth wheels on the planet, thanks to the lightweight rims, hubs and Berd spokes weighing only 2.4 grams each.

Written Real-World Riding Experience of the Berd Sparrow50 Gold Wheels

Wider carbon aero gravel wheels have been garnering much attention the past year or two, and typically, you can have two things with a wheelset of this nature. Aero and strong but not light, or aero and lightweight, but strong not so much. That changed when the Berd Sparrow50 gold wheels rolled onto the scene that are aero, strong, and light. The Berd Sparrow50 gold wheels are lighter on average by some 200 grams vs competitor wheelsets of a similar nature.

But the positives don’t end there, Berd spokes are renown for their vibration damping properties, which leads to an ultra smooth ride. Remember, appropriate tire pressure makes the biggest difference to comfort, but the Berd spokes help greatly with the comfortable and smooth riding nature of these wheels. If you care to learn more about vibration damping in cycling, and how Berd designed these very wheels, check out the white paper berd has posted on their website.

I’ve been riding these wheels for about a month, not a long term review by any means, but these wheels should be on your seriously think about buying these wheels list, and here’s why.

You may think the spoke comfort factor is all BS, but I own a pair of the first generation sparrow gravel wheels, and the hype is real. The sparrow 50’s are much better than those first generation wheels, although I do question how aero wheels of this nature with a large tyre mounted to them, in my case a 700c x 52 ENVE HEX tyre pair. However, berd being self professed bike nerds, have done their homework in the wind tunnel, mostly around a schwalbe rs pro 45mm tyre pair. However, for what it’s worth and from a placeo perspective, these wheels felt fast as fuck with these 52mm  wide enve hex tyres. That feeling of speed is happening whether you’re riding in the saddle, attacking out the saddle, or bombing a smooth and fast descent. You get all of these traits from the Sparrow50 wheels sans the rougher ride we may experience with a similar aero wheel design featuring traditional steel spokes.

These Sparrow50’s respond well to the sort of rider who may thrash their wheels about the place with out of the saddle efforts. I had no luck in flexing these wheels laterally. I’m no powerhouse rider, but I doubt you’ll find these wheels to be soft riding. They are incredibly well built at Berd HQ, laced by hand and all of the truing is by the Berd Trudi system. What’s Berd Trudi?, Check out my 2025 Hot Accessories of the MADE show where you can learn all about it, linked here.

Berd’s Talon ESL hubs with 36 tooth ratchet drive offer fast engaging excellent performance, and the bearings are still nice and smooth, as should be expected. I submerged the Sparrow 50 wheels several times, and the only negative to report there was draining the small amount of water that found its way inside the carbon rims. The sort of dunking I did isn’t a regular activity for most cyclists, but a drain hole on the side of the rim just below the rim bed would be a handy improvement.

The presentation of these wheels is simple, but I love the aesthetics, and they will pair nicely with any bike.

If you desire to upgrade a bike’s performance… well, it’s always best to look in the mirror first, because the rider does make the biggest difference. But, top notch equipment is always a source of pleasure, enjoyment, speed, and more, and the Berd Sparrow 50 gold wheels deliver on all fronts.
These wheels are priced at $US 2,395, which is very competitive vs the competition, and they include that steller warranty I mentioned earlier. Here’s something else, these wheels are also available in 32″, and I expect are the lightest 32″ wheels on the market.

Seat of the pants speed is interesting, but I would want to see a comparison of the speed at set wattage of various wheels on the same bike.
