Written Ride Experience / Review (or see the video above)
Any carbon wheelset sub 1400 grams including rim strips and valves is very respectable, and is going to possess excellent traits pertaining to responsiveness, acceleration, and so on. Such is the advantage of a nice light weight wheelset.

The trouble with the Reynolds BL Expert wheels are their 25mm inner rim width, which is considered obsolete by much of the cycling industry, at least in the American market. At the time of this video, there are so many competing gravel wheelset offerings with internal rim widths of 28mm, 30mm, 35mm, and so on. Realistically, 25mm internal is just fine, heck 23mm is just fine, but you get my point. Consequently, this wheelset could be a difficult sell, especially as it was originally intended to pair up with 35 to 40mm wide gravel tires.

However that doesn’t mean these are bad wheels, they are excellent, and the hooked rim is going to appeal to many. I’d say these wheels were intended for the European market, where the accepted norms for the UCI pro crowd in parts of Europe are well served by 35mm to 40mm tyres. In the USA market, gravel tyres keep increasing in width. With all of this said, I began this gravel cycling madness way back in 2006 riding 34mm cyclocross tyres, and somehow I’m still here. Amazing!

I’ve been riding the Reynolds BL Expert wheels with 40mm tyres and breaking the rules, 45mm wide tyres too (insert shock, horror). I alluded to this earlier, the light weight of the wheels is advantageous to speed and acceleration. I’ve been running these wheels at low pressure, appropriate for my body weight, but that doesn’t mean these rims have been bottoming out and so on. However, these carbon rims are resilient to any type of road surfaces you may throw at them, and the high quality build of this wheelset sees them as round and true as the first day I received them. That is a good thing, as internal spoke nipples are an absolute pain in the arse to true. In the case of these wheels, you’d need to remove the rim tape, a serious hassle.

Performance from the Ringle Super Bubba hubs is excellent, quick engaging, no bearing issues to speak of. Overall, the Reynolds Blacklabel ATR expert wheels are very good, they aren’t going to set the world on fire due to their relatively narrow rims. However, they offer an excellent warranty, and there are sales from time to time where you could pickup these wheels for below the recommended MSRP of US $1899 ($US 1,234.99 at the time of this article – July 15, 2026).
