Old Florida Roads Get a Little Spicy

“Mayo, Florida is a town and the only municipality in Lafayette County, Florida, United States. It is the county seat of Lafayette County, and the population was 1,055 at the 2020 census. Although the current Town of Mayo was settled and established in 1874 by John B. Whitfield, the town was not officially incorporated as a municipality until 1903. Whitfield decided to name the town after James M. Mayo, who was a colonel in the Confederate States Army.” – Wikipedia.org

Downtown Mayo, very quiet on a Sunday

Nowadays, Mayo is a sleepy town in North Central Florida, surrounded by farm and cattle land, and a quiet network of unpaved and paved roads. Barring US27 which links many of these small towns as the road traverses the Florida countryside in a Northwesterly direction, most of the farm roads near and beyond Mayo are quiet and mostly devoid of any vehicular traffic. Unfortunately, shade coverage is not plentiful, making rides in these areas a challenge during the summer months of North Florida.
