“It was the year 1860 and C. W. Bluemel and Brothers Ltd. was founded in East London by Charles William Bluemel and his two brothers to produce umbrella parts. By 1896, the brothers were producing cycling accessories in a quickly expanding business. The Bluemel production facility relocated to Wolston/Coventry in 1902, and the company portfolio expanded to motorcycle parts and parts for the automotive industry, even manufacturing parts for Jaguar and Austin Martin. Unfortunately, the Bluemel brothers had to file for insolvency in the early 1980’s.”
“In 1983, SKS Germany owner Willi Blome was given a tip that the Bluemel production plant might be interesting for SKS, already well known as an air pump manufacturer and looking to expand. Mr. Blome, father of current owner Willo Blome, found pump production and machines for the manufacturing of CAB mudguards at the plant in Coventry. As SKS had already begun production of PVC mudguards, the decision was made to take over the Bluemel production equipment, which resulted in a piece of corporate history being made.”
“In 1985, a group of SKS employees travelled to England with Willi Blome to dismantle the machines and prepare them for transport to Germany. The new SKS mudguard factory produced its first order for Hercules in the winter of 1985 in Sundern Germany, where SKS Bluemels and other mudguards are still produced today. SKS Germany now delivers OEM fenders to 90 countries worldwide and is the top supplier in the EU in the plastic mudguards sector. In 2021, SKS Germany produced 4.5 million bolt-on fenders and 2 million clip-on fenders.”
