Press Release: Boyd Pinnacle Carbon Wheelsets – Gravel, Pavement & Cyclocross

“Boyd Cycling is proud to announce the new Pinnacle series of carbon wheels. Built specifically for disc brakes, and individually tailored to the demands of road, gravel, and cyclocross, the Pinnacle is designed to transform your ride. Proving once again that it’s on the inside that counts, the Pinnacle uses the same computer fluid dynamic (CFD) designed outer shape for all three models. By cleverly swapping around the inside sections of the mold for tire fit, Boyd Cycling was able to release the following models:”

36mm Road Disc:

“Not too long ago, a road racing bicycle with tire clearance for anything bigger than a 23mm tire was considered extreme. Radical. Different. Fortunately, we’ve always found ourselves on that side of the coin anyway, embracing the biggest tire we could fit into the smallest spaces possible. Over time, road cyclist began embracing disc brakes – and everything changed. Gone were the days of restrictive tire sizes governed by caliper brakes, and suddenly, everyday road bikes became a hell of a lot more capable, confident, and most importantly – more fun. To optimize a wheelset for these less restrictive, less clearance challenged bikes, we roll out the Boyd 36 Road Disc, our take on a do-everything road wheel designed for the newest crop of road bikes on the horizon. The 36 Road Disc is not a rim brake wheelset that has been adapted for use for disc brakes, it has been designed from the ground up to harmoniously function as a system with a disc brake road bike.”

“First in the 36RD’s palmares is its width: Using an enormous 22mm inner rim diameter, the 36RD gives 25mm to 30mm road tires a voluminous shape, increasing traction while affording lower (and more comfortable) pressures. Ticking the next futureproof box? Tubeless compatibility. Flat prevention and ride quality improvement are paramount here, especially when taking the 36RD off the beaten path, as we’re known to do with the bigger tires we’re now free to use. Finally, an offset construction and 36mm rim depth ensure better spoke balance, dealing better with high-torque accelerations while still providing aerodynamic gains.”

“The 36 Road Disc set weighs in at 1580 grams built with the Boyd Cycling Quest disc brake hubs.”

“MSRP: $1650 for the set.”

Pinnacle Hookless:

“The jury is in: Gravel riding and racing is here to stay, with increasingly popular events blanketing the globe – along with purpose-built bikes to match. We’ve long-since dispelled the naysayers, usually by taking them on our favorite off-piste routes out our back door into the Blue Ridge Mountains. Following up on our groundbreaking Jocassee 650b hookless gravel wheel, we present the all-new competition-ready Pinnacle.”

“Designed around a 700c tire setup, the Pinnacle follows down the trail the Jocassee blazed, but with a more-traditional wheel diameter and the litany of aerodynamically-friendly tire choices it affords. Designed around a tubeless, hookless rim profile, the Pinnacle uses a wide rim inner diameter (23.4mm) for a perfect traction-embracing lightbulbed tire profile, ideally for gravel and cyclocross tires between 32-40mm in width, as well as higher volume 28mm+ tubeless road tires. Like the Jocassee, it uses a 36mm rim depth, giving the wheel far more aerodynamic aptitude than a comparable mountain bike hoop at the higher speeds typical of a gravel race. Because the Pinnacle is a disc-specific wheel, we’ve been able to shed a few grams at the rim itself, reducing rotating mass without compromising safety, and the wheel’s unique 2.8mm offset amplifies spoke balance under heavy load.”

“The end result of our gravel-driven tweaks and refinements? The perfect no-compromise wheel for the tubeless cyclocross, gravel, and high volume tubeless road tires!”

“The Pinnacle hookless set weighs in at 1560 grams built with the Boyd Cycling Quest disc brake hubs.”

“MSRP: $1650 for the set.”

Pinnacle CX:

“It seems like only yesterday that cyclocross racing was the accessible darling of every blog, hipster, and handbuilder, bound to make competitive cycling a mass-participation sport. Then came the advent of gravel, and everyone forgot about Belgium’s native sport. But us? We haven’t yet forgotten the taste of blood in our mouths on the final run-up of the last lap. What have we wanted to forget? Rolling a tire off the rim in the critical corner right afterward. ‘Cross racing puts unique demands on tires, glue bonds, and traction, some that are afforded only by the ultra-low pressures riders can run with tubulars, and owing to this we set to work creating the ultimate CX racing wheel – the Pinnacle CX.”

“Based on our all-new Pinnacle tubeless rim, we created a tubular version with a 32mm radius rim bed to give perfect edge-to-edge tire gluing. The massive surface area gives enormous adhesion and peace of mind when PSIs are dwindling into the single digits on sloppy race courses, keeping tires from slipping off the rim while offering superb traction in terrible conditions. At 36mm deep, the 400g Pinnacle CX’s rim depth offers added aerodynamics and mud shedding you’d need in a cross race, along with plenty of acceleration and stiffness balanced by an offset rim design. The Pinnacle CX set weighs in at 1475 grams built with the Boyd Cycling Quest disc brake hubs.”

“MSRP: $1500 for the set.”
