Following its Italian launch and the workshop pilot programme, the platform is now available in 59 markets and 40 languages. The workshop software launches with the Free plan, currently in beta; Premium and Pro will follow in Q1 and Q2 2027, with a special upgrade offer reserved for early-adopter workshops that sign up during the beta. The cyclist app debuts in preview — included at no cost for customers of CrankPal workshops — and will open to everyone in Q3 2027.

CrankPal, the platform that combines predictive bicycle maintenance with a complete management system for bike workshops, today announced its international expansion: the free workshop management software — currently in beta — and, in preview, the cyclist app are now available in 59 markets, localised in 40 languages (plus 13 regional variants): from Europe to the Americas, from the UK and Switzerland to Japan, South Korea and South-East Asia, through to the Middle East, India, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

The expansion follows the platform’s launch in Italy — where all plans, including Premium and Pro, are already live — and the completion of its workshop pilot programme, which validated both the management software and the patent-pending predictive maintenance algorithm at the heart of the platform in real, day-to-day workbench conditions.

Two sides of the same experience

Founded by bicycle mechanics — and cyclists — CrankPal builds both sides of a single ecosystem:

For workshops, a complete management system born at the workbench, not behind a desk: bookings, customer and bike records, work orders and quotes, and customer communication via app and email. The Free plan is designed to remove every barrier to going digital: up to 100 work orders per month and 2,000 customers, with no cost and no credit card required. The Free plan is currently in beta: workshops that sign up during this phase will receive a special early-adopter offer on upgrading to the Premium and Pro plans.

For cyclists, an app that keeps their bike healthy: it estimates component wear by combining GPS, smartphone sensors, Strava and Garmin integrations and the bike’s service history — warning riders before a failure, not after. From the app, riders book directly with their trusted workshop and follow repair status in real time, right from the iPhone lock screen. The app is available today in preview, and is free for customers of workshops using CrankPal — and its core features will stay free for them after the public launch.

The two sides talk to each other: the app is the direct channel between workshop and cyclist. Quotes are approved with a tap, repair status is followed in real time, and every exchange lives in a single thread — replacing missed phone calls, scattered messages and “I’ll drop by later to check”. For the workshop, that means fewer interruptions at the bench; for the cyclist, always knowing exactly where their bike stands.

The same network also works as a lead generator for workshops: cyclists using the app search for, choose and book affiliated workshops, and predictive maintenance alerts turn into booked interventions — new, recurring work at zero acquisition cost. For a workshop, joining CrankPal isn’t just about going digital: it’s about being found.

Being found is also what CrankPages (crankpages.crankpal.com) is for: the public directory through which CrankPal is mapping the world’s bike workshops — nearly 60,000 of them in more than 100 countries. Any workshop can claim its listing at no cost and complete it with its own details; those that join CrankPal become “CrankPals”, recognisable by the badge on their page.

At the heart of the platform is the digital bike passport: a full census of frame and components, a certified service history and ownership transfer — value that stays with the bicycle for its entire life.

“In aviation, nobody waits for the failure: every component has a known service life and gets replaced before it gives way. That’s the discipline I learned as an FAA-certified mechanic — and throughout my years in urban mobility it always struck me that it didn’t apply to the bicycle, which for millions of people is how they get to work every day. CrankPal brings that discipline to the people who ride and the people who repair: the workshop stops chasing breakdowns and moves back to the centre. And giving the base version of the software away isn’t a promotion — it’s the most direct way to build this network,” says Umberto Javarone, founder and CEO of CrankPal.

The project builds on a career that bridges CrankPal’s two worlds: urban mobility and maintenance culture. Before founding the company, Javarone was Country General Manager of FreeNow in Italy and Head of Urban Mobility Italy at Europcar Mobility Group, following years at Apple in Cupertino, in Maps field operations. He is also an FAA-certified mechanic — the qualification held by aircraft maintenance technicians, in the industry where scheduled and predictive maintenance is the rule, not the exception — and holds an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley.

How the Algorithm Works (Patent Pending)

At the core of CrankPal is a proprietary, patent-pending predictive model that estimates the remaining life of every individual bicycle component — chain, cassette, brake pads, rotors, tyres, cables, bearings and dozens of other categories — rather than issuing a generic “time for a service” reminder.

The model starts from the physics of wear: for each component category it encodes mechanics’ knowledge — reference service life, how much bike type matters (road, gravel, MTB, e-bike, urban), the impact of elevation, riding intensity and wet-weather rides, and even the asymmetry between front and rear (a front and a rear brake pad don’t wear the same way). On top of this foundation runs a statistical survival model that weighs two clocks in parallel: kilometres ridden and time elapsed — because a cable ages even while the bike sits in the
garage.

What sets it apart from fixed-mileage reminders is that the model learns: every real intervention recorded by a workshop in the network — a replaced chain, a brake pad worn to its limit — is a data point that refines the estimates, for that bike and for the entire platform. The more the network works, the more accurate the predictions become. Riding data comes from GPS, smartphone sensors and Strava and Garmin integrations; service history comes from the workshops’ management software.

The pilot programme confirmed the approach in the field: the algorithm’s predictions translated into well-timed interventions at the workbench, and the mechanics’ feedback — the judgement of the people who actually remove the component — became part of the model’s learning loop.

“At first I was sceptical — automatic alerts like these usually aren’t worth much. Then a bike came in flagged by the app for its chain, I put the wear gauge on it, and the stretch was exactly where it should be: due for replacement, just in time to save the cassette. That changed my mind. For me the difference is that customers no longer show up after the damage is done: they come in earlier, I do better work and they spend less,” says Samuele Roda, mechanic at Sensus Bike, one of the pilot programme workshops.

International Road Map: Premium in Q1 2027, Pro in Q2 2027, App for everyone in Q3 2027

The international rollout starts with the Free plan — currently in beta — and the cyclist app. Paid plans will follow outside Italy in the coming months, priced in local currency, with a special upgrade offer for early adopter workshops that signed up during the beta:

  • Q1 2027 — Premium (from €49/month): inventory management, counter sales, multichannel inbox (WhatsApp, SMS, social), AI-assisted diagnosis, branded reports, shifts and roles.
  • Q2 2027 — Pro (from €99/month): everything in Premium, plus card payments and SoftPOS, e-invoicing according to each country’s rules, maintenance subscriptions for end customers, courtesy bikes, a route planner for mobile mechanics, acquisition analytics and an AI assistant.
  • Q3 2027 — Cyclist app open to everyone: public launch with a monthly or annual subscription. For customers of workshops using the CrankPal management software, the app’s core features will remain free; a waiting list for the public preview is already open on the website.

In Italy, the platform’s first market, all plans are already available — including e-invoicing fully integrated with the national exchange system (SdI). The platform is built market-ready from day one: per-country tax profiles (VAT rates, fiscal identifiers, invoicing rules), local-currency pricing, and support in Italian and English with multilingual assistance.
