In 2018 Tailfin released the AeroPack (our integrated rack and top bag), and the AP18 (the detachable version of this rack top bag for use with our stand-alone racks). Since then, we’ve made minor improvements such as increasing the size of the zips and strengthening the internal frame. In 2025 the lineage continues with the launch of our new AeroPack Cargo/AP18 Cargo – Tailfin Cycling

Designed to be compatible with existing systems, the AeroPack Cargo/AP18 Cargo will sit in the range alongside the existing AeroPack and AP18 Top Bag, using Tailfin’s modular system to allow any of our current customers to easily upgrade. New customers can specify the AeroPack Cargo or AP18 Cargo from the outset, with the ability to switch to the non-Cargo versions later down the line if they wish.

Why?
At Tailfin, one of our core values is continuous improvement. We’re always looking for ways that bikepacking gear can be better. Whether that’s in the larger bikepacking market or improvements to our existing products, we’re hungry for the challenge.

We took on board feedback from our ‘R&D Division’ riders and existing customers in terms of what they loved about the existing AeroPack/AP18 Rack Top Bag, but also what they felt could be improved. When analysing this feedback, it was obvious that riders loved the idea of additional, expandable, exterior pockets and a faster closure system. We first introduced this on our Bar Bag System launched late last year.

Thinking that this larger, more practical version would be aimed squarely at the casual or touring rider, we were pleasantly surprised that the racers in the R&D Division couldn’t get enough of the practicality, ease of use and, more importantly, the rapidity of being able to securely stow and access kit on the go.

Never wanting to leave our loyal customers behind, we’ve made sure the AeroPack Cargo/AP18 Cargo is fully reverse-compatible with our current systems. Want to upgrade your current AeroPack or AP18 Rack Top Bag? You can buy the bag by itself and install it with just a few screws.

The AeroPack Cargo/AP18 Cargo is the logical progression of our rear on-bike storage system, just as bib shorts with cargo pockets are now almost the standard for long-distance riding. From taking a few beers from the nearest shop to your campsite to stashing wet overtrousers without contaminating your dry kit on an ultra, the exterior mesh cargo pockets are invaluable in a huge number of situations. With the Cargo, you can do it all.

Features
The same 18-litre main compartment but with a few twists:
- Expandable cargo pockets, adding up to 3L of extra storage and another ‘room’ to your bikepacking setup. The material we chose for the stretch pockets combines the perfect amount of stretch whilst being robust enough to take the inevitable abrasion that comes with being leaned against a wall or a close encounter with a bush.
- Single-buckle closure system speeds up access to the main compartment. The new system removes the need for the two extra buckles at the front or rear of the bag found on our current design, making it easier to close when fully packed.
- Single, adjustable-length TPU compression strap integrated into mesh pockets allows for additional security of the pocket contents whilst providing fast and strong main pack compression.
- Three carbon battens have been added to help retain the bag’s shape – preventing lateral bulging of the main compartment when stuffed full.
- Centralised light loops allow ‘clipable’ or ‘wearable’ lights to attach directly to the pack pointing directly backwards.
Increased reflective details for better visibility during night riding. - The lower accessory mounts have universal spacing of 64mm, allowing you to run a Tailfin cargo cage, or a standard bottle cage.
Alternatively, these screw holes can used to mount our adjustable light mounts which mimic a seatpost. This way up to two full powered seatpost lights or even a radar can be used and are kept out of the firing line of mud and water sprayed up from the rear tyre. - Internal nylon base material in a lighter, contrasting colour to enhance the visibility of your bag’s contents in low light.
Tried-and-tested Air Valve from our pannier bag range helps you to compress the bag’s contents for carrying even more.
