Saturday, June 4, 2016, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew drove a long way – over 2,400 miles round trip to race 200+ miles and over 9,000 feet of climbing in Kansas – at the World’s Premier Gravel Race – Dirty Kanza 200 in Emporia, Kansas. Check out JOM’s race report HERE and an article about his race bike, HERE. Kansas is far from flat!

Please enjoy the 2016 Dirty Kanza 200 from the camera perspective of JOM and K-Dogg, in the beauty of High Definition (720p and 1080p)!

Hilarious. All the obsessive back and forth about hand position and the best drop bars to use for gravel racing and in that whole video, only ONE GUY riding in the drops. Every other rider was on the brake hoods or had flat bars!! lol

I rode a fair amount in the drops during the 3rd leg, but that was because the massive headwind.

So massive… glad I saved some petrol in the tank for that leg. Ouch.

I need drop bar cam… 🙂 I was all over the drops on the tailwind / flatter sections near Checkpoint #2, but I ride the bar tops a lot… I find that pretty comfy on gravel roads. If I get bored, I should go back through my footage and take a gander. Drop bar survey haha!

      Ayjaydee,
I move my hand position a lot on long bumpy rides to keep the brusing down and
to relive my back. At 61 this is no brainer.
      Jim,
the more clearance the better. That mud had little marble-sized rocks mixed in that
could bridge a 3 inch gap and totally lock up your wheel, break your drive chain
and end your race in seconds. The more clearance the better. Who needs a TT bike in a gravel race?

    Awesome video as usual JOM.
The Flint Hills are really beautiful. Perhaps I’ll drive
a comfy jeep there one day.
On a bike? Not so much. At least for now.

Yes, a jeep! I’m wondering if that bloke in the SUV ever got it out of the creek bed? I give it a month and you’ll be gung-ho for DK200 again 🙂

      Thanks for your video dude.

I’m a 2016 DK200 Finisher… albeit in the morning hours. Thanks for taking the time and effort to video, compile, and edit such a memorable day. Having some video to document the day from the GravelCyclist Team makes it truly special.
I echo Ted King’s statement of it being “absolutely brutal” day of racing/riding. Congrats on finishing and K-Dogg’s Age Group win.
Hope to see you guys at more races soon!

Thanks Sasha! Anyone who finished the event deserves a medal. If I wasn’t zoned out laying around my accommodations, I would loved to have interviewed some of the finishers rolling in during the wee hours of the morning – the later finishers truly epitomize the spirit of gravel riding and racing. If you’re up for writing a small report, we would love to share your experience with the website.

Well done – both the video and for completing the DK 200 – esp. for the K-Doggs! Question – looking back which would have been a better chioce – a monster cross like K-D rode or a gravel grinder like you rode?

    • JOM JOM

Hi Jim, thanks! If I had time to swap the bike before the race at 4am on raceday, I would have ridden the Monster CX rig. K-Dogg’s Monster CX rig was fitted with the Teravail Cannonball tyres in 38mm – he had to walk a short distance before riding again. He had PLENTY of tyre clearance. Barring the mud sector, the grave grinder rig was spot on. Hopefully we have more notice with potential rainfall next year… blasted errant rain storm!!!

  5. Hey, I’m just browsing around and found your blog. Cool video! Decided to become a follower now 🙂 Keep it up!
